PAINTINGS: DISTANT FRONT LINE
2024 - 2025 | Klaipėda | Lithuania
When the war in Ukraine began, it shocked much of the world, particularly in Europe. Over time, however, many grew desensitized—gradually learning to look away, to remain silent, or to pretend such horrors were not unfolding.
For those living far from the front lines, the fear of war has taken a quieter form—internalized, unspoken, and often hidden. Speaking openly about fear, anxiety, or despair has come to feel inappropriate or out of place when not directly involved in combat. Yet these emotions persist regardless of proximity to the battlefield.
In this series of five paintings, Evelina Simanavičiūtė gives form to these silent fears. While physically distant from the war, she remains emotionally close, and uses the work to express deep feelings of helplessness, loss, and dread. The paintings serve as a visual reflection of the invisible weight carried by those who witness conflict from afar but still feel its impact profoundly.
